Joy's mother, who was a judge on the panel for the Miss Korea Pageants throughout the 80's and 90's, saw the talent in Joy and later sent her abroad to study fashion design. Joy attended AIU with a full scholarship and in 1998 received her bachelor's degree in fashion design.

Since graduating, she has designed for many renowned L.A. labels and in 2003, created her own line "VOOM by Joy Han", a vintage inspired edgy yet feminine sportswear line for the fashion forward woman.
